ISL All League RecipientsSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

I should have done this post a long, long time ago but I got a little bit lazy at the very end of my senior year and I never posted it.

Carl Reid won the MVP award as expected; he has to be one of the first underclassman in a while that's won the Boys' MVP.

All-ISL List
Belmont Hill - Carl Reid '13, Jack Welch '11, Peter Yanofsky '10
Governor's Academy - Nate Collins '10
Milton Academy - Andrew Lebovitz '10, Matt Lebovitz '12
Nobles - Cam Chapman '13
Roxbury Latin - Carl Defranco '11
St. Sebastian's - Conor Haughey '12
Thayer Academy - Richie Robbie '11

MVP Race

MVP RaceSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

A lot has changed since I last discussed the MVP Race.

Basically Carl Reid is the clear cut MVP at this point in the season.  He played the first few matches at number 2, including the Thayer match when he would've played Richie Robbie.  Yanofsky played 1 for Bel Hill and split with Robbie.  Reid hasn't lost a set all season and he has signature wins over Andrew Lebovitz and Nate Collins.  If he goes the rest of the season at number 1 without dropping a set there is zero doubt in my mind that he's the most deserving player to get MVP even though he's a freshman.  My only concern is that even if he wins out that they will give MVP to a senior (probably Lebovitz) because the past four MVP Awards have all gone to seniors.

Jill Rooney won the Girls' MVP as a middle schooler 3 years ago so clearly the Girls' coaches don't have a bias against underclassmen.  The reason why I'm afraid Reid won't get it though is because 2 years ago Tom Darling, a junior from Thayer was the strongest player in the league and yet the MVP award went to senior Alex Skinner of Brooks.  I make that statement with no intended disrespect to Skinner because he's an incredible player, there's no denying though that Darling didn't drop any sets and he beat Skinner.

If Carl doesn't win MVP it will either go to Andrew Lebovitz '10 of Milton or Nate Collins '10 of Governor's.  The loser of the Lebovitz-Collins match won't have a shot at MVP.

Pre-Season MVP Favorites

Pre-Season MVP FavoritesSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Once or twice a month there will be a post updating the MVP race. As we go into the season a few players stand out in my mind as early favorites to win MVP. This list is in no particular order.

Andrew Lebovitz, '10, Milton
He was the strongest number 2 in the league last year and because Noah Bragg is not playing this year he' s guaranteed the number 1 spot for Milton.

Nate Collins, '10, Governor's
Nate's a strong player and although his team has not won too many matches in recent years he's had a lot of success. This will be his fourth year playing number 1.

Peter Yanofsky, '10, Belmont Hill
He should have plenty of competition for the number 1 spot within his own team but I expect him to have a very strong season. His serve is very difficult to deal with on Belmont Hill's lightning fast courts.

Richie Robbie, '11, Thayer
I can't remember the last time a junior won MVP but Richie has improved a lot in the past few years and it's not far fetched to think he has a shot. His problem is that as someone who's not a senior he needs to dominate the league or the award will go to a graduating player.

2009 Awards

2009 AwardsSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Most Valuable Player
Tom Darling, Senior, Thayer
Without a doubt Tom was the strongest player in the league. He didn't drop a set the entire season and arguably should have won the award his junior year after beating Alex Skinner and having the strongest record. Tim Chang of Nobles came closest to ending his perfect season but fell in a tight second set tiebreak 8-6. Tom is playing tennis at Elon this year.

All-League Awards
Tom Darling ('09) and Richie Robbie ('11), Thayer;
Jack Welch ('11) and Peter Yanofsky ('10), Belmont Hill;
Andrew Lebovitz ('10), Noah Bragg ('11) and Will Hunnewell ('09), Milton;
Max White ('09) and Tim Chang ('09), Nobles;
Nate Collins ('10), Governor’s;
David Miller ('09), Roxbury Latin;
Will Rives ('09), St. Paul’s;
Cam Lovett-Woodsum ('10), BB&N.
